Thistle Shopping Centre: Infrastructure Renewal & Smart Lighting

A £420k comprehensive revitalization project involving full electrical strip-out, re-cabling, and installation of a premium THORN LED system controlled by DALI protocols.

Executive Summary

The Brief: Beyond Surface Level

Client: Thistle Shopping Centre, Stirling

Project Value: £420k

Scope: Full Strip-Out, Re-Cabling, LED Install, DALI Commissioning

Technology Partner: THORN Lighting

The Thistle Shopping Centre required more than just a cosmetic upgrade. The existing lighting infrastructure was supported by aging cabling that was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. The brief called for a total modernisation of the mall's visual environment, but also a complete renewal of the electrical backbone that powered it. For the Asset Managers, this was a critical capital project. The goal was to secure the long-term operational viability of the centre while reducing energy overheads and eliminating the maintenance liability of the legacy wiring.

The Solution: Value Engineering in Action

Complex Strip-Out & Specification Compliance

This project highlights GreenTech’s ability to execute complex electrical engineering within a "Live" environment. The scope involved the complete removal of the redundant lighting grid and the installation of a brand-new cabling infrastructure.

Specification Adherence (THORN):While we often Value Engineer projects, we also understand the importance of strict specification adherence for institutional clients. The client specified THORN Lighting for their proven optical performance and build quality. GreenTech procured and installed the specified THORN luminaires, ensuring the client’s exact standards for Lux levels and uniformity were met without deviation.

Technical Implementation

Wired for the Future: DALI Control

A modern retail environment requires flexibility. We moved the centre away from rigid circuit-based switching to a fully digital DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) system.

Infrastructure Upgrade:

  • Full Re-Cabling: We replaced the aging twin-and-earth cabling with a robust, Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) cabling network, ensuring fire safety compliance throughout the ceiling voids.
  • Granular Control: The DALI integration allows the facilities team to control individual fittings or groups. This enables specific "Marketing Modes" for events in the main square, or energy-saving dimming during low-footfall periods.

Managing the Void:

Stripping out old cabling produces dust and waste, two things that are unacceptable in a retail mall. GreenTech managed this risk through a rigorous logistical strategy.

Our teams worked exclusively during silent hours to strip out the old infrastructure. We utilised distinct "waste pathways" to remove debris without contaminating the retail floor. By morning, the ceiling tiles were replaced, the floor was polished, and the new system was progressively brought online, ensuring the shopping experience remained seamless for the public throughout the £420k renovation.

The Results

Secured Assets & Lower Costs

The Thistle Shopping Centre project stands as proof of GreenTech's capacity for heavy infrastructure renewal.

Key Outcomes:

  • Electrical Safety: Complete removal of degraded legacy cabling, removing fire risks.
  • Energy Reduction: The switch to THORN LEDs and DALI dimming has slashed lighting loads.
  • Visual Comfort: The premium optics of the THORN fittings have eliminated glare, creating a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers.
