Union Square Aberdeen: Retail Illumination & Intelligent Control

A landmark £1.1m infrastructure upgrade for Aberdeen’s premier shopping destination. Delivering a fully integrated LED and DALI control solution with zero disruption to retail operations.

Executive Summary

The Brief: Aesthetic Impact meets Operational Efficiency

Client: Union Square Shopping Centre

Project Value: £1.1 Million

Sector: Retail & Leisure

Service: LED Retrofit & Centralized DALI Controls

Technology Partners: BRIGHTMAN (Luminaires) | PHILIPS DYNALITE (Controls)

Union Square is more than a shopping centre; it is the retail heart of Aberdeen. The objective was to completely overhaul the aging lighting infrastructure across the malls, atriums, and car parks. The goal was dual-purpose: drastically reduce the site’s megawatt-scale energy consumption while enhancing the customer experience through superior light quality. Upon tendering, GreenTech Scotland applied our signature Value Engineering methodology. We recognized that for a project of this magnitude (£1.1m), component selection was critical to the Return on Investment (ROI). We successfully proposed an alternative specification that balanced premium aesthetic performance with aggressive commercial efficiency

The Solution: Value Engineering in Action

Engineering Value at Scale

Standardising a 500,000+ sq ft retail environment requires robust hardware. GreenTech led a procurement exercise to identify manufacturing partners capable of delivering reliability and longevity.

The BRIGHTMAN Advantage: We selected BRIGHTMAN as the primary luminaire manufacturer. Their fixtures offered the high Colour Rendering Index (CRI>90) required to make retail displays pop, while offering significant capital savings compared to the original specification.

The PHILIPS DYNALITE Backbone: For control, we deployed a comprehensive PHILIPS DYNALITE system. This acts as the "nervous system" of the shopping centre, allowing facilities managers to orchestrate lighting scenes across the entire complex from a single interface.

Technical Implementation

DALI Integration & Head-End Control

The complexity of Union Square demanded more than simple on/off switching. GreenTech engineered a fully addressable DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) network.

Centralized Command (Head-End PC):

At the core of the installation is a dedicated Head-End PC running control software. This gives the onsite Facility Management team total granular control:

  • Scene Setting: Pre-programmed modes for "Day Trade," "Evening Dining," and "Cleaners Mode" (100% brightness).
  • Daylight Harvesting: Sensors in the glass atrium automatically dim the artificial lighting when natural sunlight is sufficient, maximising energy savings.
  • Emergency Monitoring: The software automatically tests emergency lighting and flags lamp failures on the digital floorplan, eliminating manual walk-around checks.
The Results

A Brighter, Smarter Asset

The Union Square project demonstrates GreenTech’s capacity to handle seven-figure infrastructure contracts with precision.

Key Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Ambiance: A consistent, high-quality light temperature that modernizes the mall's aesthetic.
  • Total Visibility: The Head-End PC provides real-time data on energy usage and system health.
  • Future-Proof: The Philips Dynalite system is scalable, allowing for future integration with AV or HVAC systems.
